In an effort to boost its media presence and journalistic integrity, The Honeycomb (THC), official campus media of Abuyog Community College recently hosted a two-day Capacity Building-cum-Enhancement Camp on August 2-3, 2024 at ACC Business Incubation Facility and Paraiso ni Aurelio Beach Resort.

With a sharp focus on refining publication editorial policies and electing a new editorial board on its first day. Said event marked a significant milestone in the campus’s ongoing commitment to excellence in student journalism.

The camp was attended by the THC editorial board, staff, creatives, news correspondents, and faculty advisors. Through a series of interactive sessions, attendees delved deep into the intricacies of editorial policymaking. The goal was to equip THC members with the skills necessary to uphold the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and responsibility in their reporting.

One of the key highlights of the event was a workshop on “Crafting Robust Editorial Policies,” led by Professor Alvin Advincula, THC Coordinator. Prof. Advincula emphasized the importance of transparent and comprehensive editorial guidelines in fostering trust and harmonious working experience.

His insights were complemented by practical sessions on policy implementation, where participants collaborated to refine their own editorial policies.

Another notable segment was the Social Media Editor’s Accomplishment report by Jasper Jay Ferrera, Head Photojournalist and the Editor-in-chief’s Overall report by Steven Mark Parado, Editor-in-chief. This report showcased the achievements and progress made by THC members over the past semesters.

The culmination of the first day of the camp was the much-anticipated election of the new editorial board.

After a rigorous selection process, the new editorial board was announced, comprising a dynamic mix of experienced editors and fresh talent. The newly elected editorial board members expressed their commitment to upholding the values of integrity, innovation, and inclusivity in their editorial practices for the academic year 2024-2025.

In addition to the professional development activities, the camp featured a range of team-building exercises and outdoor adventures on the second day.

These activities include problem-solving challenges, and collaborative projects aimed at fostering a sense of unity and cooperation among the team members.

The camp also provided an opportunity for the graduating THC members as well as THC alumni to share their experiences and insights with the newer team members, creating a mentoring environment that benefited everyone involved.

“The camp was a fantastic opportunity for us to not only learn new skills but also to bond with our peers in a meaningful way,” said Chyra Mae Ceraga, a graduating news correspondent of THC. “It’s these connections that will help us work better together and support each other as we move forward in our careers.”

In his closing remarks, THC Coordinator, Professor Alvin Advincula, lauded the participants for their enthusiasm and dedication. “This camp has been a testament to the vibrant journalistic spirit within our campus community. I am confident that the knowledge and skills gained here will translate into exceptional media outputs that reflect the diverse voices and perspectives of our campus and community.” he said.

As the camp concluded, participants expressed their gratitude for the experience and their enthusiasm for future endeavors.

The bonds formed and the skills acquired during the camp are expected to significantly benefit The Honeycomb and its members as they continue to grow and succeed.

As The Honeycomb moves forward and beyond with its revamped editorial standards and newly elected editorial board, the future of its publications looks promising.
