To shed some light on the role of campus journalism in every learning institution and to take a closer look at the challenges faced by real journalists in this era of fake news, Abuyog Community College Senior High School(ACC-SHS) department enacted the learning enhancement activity beyond content focused on “Issues Confronting the Real Journalist” on Thursday, February 16 at ACC gymnasium.

In attendance to the said symposium were ACC-SHS faculty, students and budding journalists from The Honeybuzz and The Honeycomb and with their invited resource speaker, Mr. Kevin Siosana, a veteran broadcast journalist of RMN Tacloban City.

In his talk, Mr. Siosana highlighted that one of the issues faced by journalist was lack of public interest on quality journalism by its audience.

“The public doesn’t care [ about ] quality journalism. Napakarami niyan, whether you are a security guard, a student or any level of the society where you in, nakakalungkot na marami ang ayaw sa quality journalism. Kasi mas gusto natin sa tiktok”.

When asked about why is there a need to let the students know about the issues confronted by real journalist, Mr. Kevin Siosana answered that now is the time to know the current issues for them to be aware and plan actions towards those issues.

“I don’t want them to wait until they will find a work after graduation. Planning is very important. You have to plan even if you are still in school.” Mr. Siosana answered.

In addition, Mr. Siosana gave helpful tips to aspiring journalist, they must be updated with the current events and trends as well as do careful analysis and research when writing.

“Magresearch ka talaga, so that your can support what you are standing for”, he added

Indeed, journalism is an enormous challenge that only valiant souls would choose as a career, and it is their passion that will drive them to overcome every adversity.
