As part of the Organization of Student Services Educators, Inc. (OSSEI) commitment to equip the journalistic skills of budding writers and reporters, as well as improve the conduct of campus journalism in their respective institution and beyond, made its waves as it enters the second day held at Baguio Crown Legacy Hotel, Baguio City on September 29, Friday.
The national training workshop on campus journalism continued with the lecture discussion and enabling activities on the different journalistic topic such as hard news and soft news, multimedia journalism, editorial cartooning and page layout and design.
Starting the day right, Philippine Daily Inquirer news reporter, Mr. Melvin Gascon emphasized on his talk that either hard news (straight news) or soft news (feature news) it must rely on a writer’s ability to maintain the reader’s attention throughout the entire piece.
Mr. Gascon also affirmed that campus journalism in today’s changing landscape should never be silenced and must thrive to serve its main purpose- inform and hold people to power.
“Para kanino ka sumusulat? The citizens have the right to know and as campus journalists our loyalty is for the citizens.” Gascon quipped.
Meanwhile, freelance visual journalist, Mr. Jimmy Domingo shared some of his multimedia journalism projects that depicts relevant and timely issues.
Mr. Domingo pointed out that for a multimedia presentation to stand out, visual journalist must have the self-knowledge, passion and talent in going beyond the words.
“Multimedia storytelling must be a truthful representation that captures slices of life both visually and aurally.”, Domingo said.
Furthermore, Mr. Ever Samson, lecturer on Editorial Cartooning shared his experiences and insights offering a valuable perspective to aspiring cartoonists.
Mr. Samson believed that the workshop will empower campus journalists to make a significant impact in the world of media.
Moreover, Prof. Regidor Gaboy from Central Luzon State University (CLSU) pointed out helpful tips on Page Layout and Design.
Prof. Gaboy stressed that campus publication must keep on track of the latest trends in designing and publishing contents either in print or digital. ” Know your format preference, know your readers, and know the basic principles and elements of design.”, Prof. Gaboy emphasized.
The event wrapped for the day as student journalists had to get their pen and papers ready as they embark and work collaboratively on the different on-the-spot workshops in the realms of journalism provided by the lecturers.
In spite of the challenges brought about by the pandemic, OSSEI believed that the return of the training workshop will greatly improve the practice of campus journalism in the country and to answer the needs of higher education education students in the 21st century.
