Surge in Accidents Near Abuyog Community College Sparks Safety Concerns
by Celina Piamonte
Abuyog Community College students, staff, and nearby residents have become alarmingly familiar with the screech of tires and the sound of crashes. The national highway in front of the college, once considered a typical route, has now become a hazardous zone for many pedestrians and motorists. For two consecutive days, the rise in accidents along this stretch has raised concerns about road safety, leading the community to ask: “What’s being done to prevent more tragedies?”
Several factors contribute to the rising number of accidents, with speeding vehicles and poor visibility near the school being the most alarming. Pedestrians, particularly students, face the brunt of this danger as they navigate the narrow paths without proper safety barriers or crossing zones.
In September alone, two serious accidents were reported, including a collision that left two motorists lifeless.
Hearing about this alarming news, the college president, Dr. Clemelle L. Montallana ordered the closure of side gate for the interest of public safety and shall be barred from entry for any ACC faculty, personnel and students.
In his order it must be padlocked and can be opened only on emergencies, effective immediately.
Local residents and passersby are also speaking out, urging their peers to be cautious and follow road safety guidelines. “The risks are real, and we need to act fast before another tragedy occurs,” says one of the local resident.
As the community waits for these improvements, the message is clear: both motorists and pedestrians must remain vigilant. The future of Abuyog’s road safety depends not only on infrastructure but also on awareness and responsibility from everyone using the highway.
